Start with the product, then the container
LCL shares a container with other shipments. FCL reserves a container for the agreed load. For food and supplements, the first question is whether the product, packaging and storage needs fit the proposed journey.
A small order is not automatically suitable for LCL. A larger order does not automatically need FCL. Heat-sensitive products, fragile packs and non-stackable pallets can change the handling options.
Compare the handoffs
| Decision | LCL | FCL |
|---|---|---|
| Handling | Review consolidation and destination deconsolidation. | Agree the full-container loading and unloading plan. |
| Cargo compatibility | Discuss odour-sensitive goods, packaging and other cargo. | Plan the load and product compatibility within your order. |
| Receiving | Confirm cartons or pallets and the warehouse appointment. | Confirm container access, unloading time and return arrangements. |
Compare the complete cost
Send the same finished dimensions, gross weight, pickup city and US delivery ZIP for both options. Include pallet height, overhang and stackability. Loose-carton dimensions can understate the space of a finished pallet.
Ask each quote to identify origin work, ocean freight, destination handling and delivery. Check minimums, duties, broker charges and any separately agreed regulatory work. A lower ocean rate alone does not establish a lower delivered cost.
Use one brief for both options
- Product list and manufacturer storage requirements.
- Finished carton or pallet dimensions, gross weight and quantity.
- China pickup location and US receiving address.
- Importer, broker and warehouse appointment arrangements.
