Ingredients & seasonings. Details make the difference.

Dry ingredients, seasoning blends and packaged condiments need a precise description before a route can be proposed.

Packaged dry food ingredients

Declare the full composition first

Send the complete ingredient list for a blend, including carriers, anti-caking agents and any animal-derived components. State plainly whether it is a finished retail food or a bulk ingredient headed for further processing. Attach a product specification where one exists.

Sauces, stocks, spice blends and seasoning packets cannot be grouped by outer packaging alone. The ingredients, the processing method and the origin can all change the review. Have your importer or regulatory adviser settle any agency or permit questions before freight is booked.

Mixing several products in one shipment? Itemise each one. A single generic “ingredient” line on the paperwork hides differences that will surface at the warehouse or at entry.

When in doubt, send the spec sheet and a photo of the finished pack. A short conversation at the quoting stage usually avoids a much longer one at the receiving dock.

Give us the numbers that drive the quote: carton count, outer dimensions, gross weight, and whether the goods palletise or floor-load. LCL billing uses weight or volume, whichever is greater, and a minimum billable volume commonly applies. Precise finished dimensions keep the quote stable from booking to delivery.

For finished beverage powders, see supplement powder shipping; for tea and coffee lines, see tea and coffee. The full product range is on the product hub.

Labels, net weight and dating

Labels must match the product. The net weight, the ingredient statement and the allergen information on the pack should agree with the specification and the invoice. Send label files to your importer early so there are no surprises at entry.

Expiry or production dating has to be legible on both the product and the master carton. A lot number alone is often not enough. If you supply Amazon or another retail channel, note that edible goods commonly require clear dating at a readable size and enough remaining shelf life to sell through; check the current platform policy for your category.

Keep batch records tidy. Record product names, SKU references, batch identifiers and quantities so the importer and the receiving warehouse can reconcile the load without a round of emails.

The US importer of record usually needs to be identified on the food label, alongside the net weight and the origin. Sort that out before printing the pack run, because relabelling a full container at destination is slow and expensive. Send label artwork to your importer for review at the same time you send it to the printer.

Packaging that survives the voyage

Food ingredients come in liquid, dry powder and bulk forms, and each needs its own packaging logic. Do not assume one carton style fits the whole range.

FormatPackaging focusWatch-outs
Liquid condiment / sauceClosure tests, secondary containment, bottle protectionLeaks, carton orientation, glass breakage
Dry spice / seasoning blendSealed moisture barrier, anti-caking controlClumping, powder leakage, compression
Bulk bag or drumClosure method, pack strength, lifting pointsSplits, pallet load integrity, spillage
Glass jarDividers, cushioning, fragile markingBreakage, poor handling instructions

Food liquids and powders are still a food-led review. Their physical form does not turn them into an industrial chemical shipment. Classification follows the actual composition and intended use, and packaging follows the physical reality of the cargo.

Keep everything off the floor on pallets, away from container walls, and away from wet or strongly scented neighbours. In LCL the cartons move through a destination deconsolidation warehouse, so the outer carton must take extra handling.

Shrink-wrap the pallets and keep the stack height within what the cartons can bear. A collapsing pallet at the destination warehouse ruins more than the crushed cartons on the bottom layer. If the receiving racking has height or width limits, design the pallet to fit before you pack, not after.

Preshipment checks and paperwork

Before the cargo leaves origin, run a short check: are the product and ingredient details complete and consistent? What storage conditions must hold through transport? Who is the US importer and which broker files entry? Does the destination warehouse accept this pack and pallet format?

Align the commercial invoice and packing list to the physical load. The description, net weight and marks should match exactly, so the warehouse receives the shipment without chasing discrepancies.

Food imports run under FDA timing rules. FDA prior notice is due at least 8 hours before ocean arrival, and the Importer Security Filing (ISF) is due 24 hours before loading. The US importer of record owns these filings and FSVP; we coordinate freight documents around their schedule.

Give the destination ZIP code and the warehouse appointment rule early. The truck, the unloading equipment and the whole delivery plan depend on it, and a missed appointment can leave your pallet on a dock for days.

For bulk orders, agree on lot separation and the receiving format. If repacking or relabelling is needed in the US, decide who does it and where, and how it changes the final carton dimensions and the quote.

Ask for surcharges itemised in writing. Fuel, terminal, security and peak-season charges vary by sailing week and carrier, and a formal entry carries a small merchandise processing fee. Broker and forwarder service fees are quoted per item, so compare the complete door-to-door scope rather than the ocean rate alone.

Retail versus bulk ingredient orders

The paperwork, packing and handling priorities shift with order profile. Align the documents to how the goods actually leave origin and are received.

Around 15 CBM is the usual LCL-to-FCL starting point; ask for both quotes below and above it, because destination LCL charges can add up. China to the US West Coast runs roughly 13–21 days port-to-port by FCL and 25–35 days to the US East Coast, with LCL adding about 3–7 days. Confirm the current schedule with your forwarder.

Before booking, run a quick preshipment check:

  • Is the full composition, including carriers and allergens, documented?
  • Do the labels match the specification and the invoice?
  • Are expiry or batch marks legible on pack and master carton?
  • Is the delivery ZIP code and the warehouse receiving rule confirmed?
  • Has the US importer set up prior notice and FSVP for the product?

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need to ship ingredients and seasonings to the USA?

A consistent commercial invoice and packing list, a product specification, label files and batch references. The US importer files FDA prior notice and handles FSVP; we coordinate the freight-side paperwork and timing around those filings.

Do spice blends need special packaging for ocean freight?

Yes, usually a sealed moisture barrier to stop clumping, strong outer cartons and off-floor stowage. Keep seasonings away from wet or strongly scented cargo, especially in shared LCL containers.

Is my ingredient a food or an industrial product for shipping?

Classification follows the actual composition and intended use. Food ingredients stay under the food import review even when they ship in bulk. Have your importer settle the question before booking.

When is LCL better than FCL for ingredient shipments?

Below roughly 15 CBM, LCL is usually the practical choice. Above that, ask for both quotes, since destination LCL deconsolidation charges can add up. Compare door-to-door totals.

How long does shipping from China to the USA take?

About 13–21 days to the US West Coast and 25–35 days to the US East Coast by FCL port-to-port. LCL adds about 3–7 days and door-to-door commonly runs 30–50 days. Confirm the current schedule for your sailing week.
