Tea & coffee. Care in every package.

Commercial freight planning for sealed tea, roasted coffee and dry beverage products.

Tea and coffee packaging

Describe the tea or coffee product before you quote

Start by naming the exact format you move. Retail tea bags, loose-leaf tea, roasted whole beans, ground coffee, herbal blends and formulated drink mixes each ship differently. The words “tea” or “coffee” on their own are not enough to build a reliable freight plan around.

Give the manufacturer, the processing level, the full ingredient list and the country of origin. Unprocessed plant material can carry extra agricultural checks, and a familiar product name is not a clearance decision. Your US importer resolves those questions; we plan the freight around the answer they give.

Tell us the finished pack, the master carton dimensions and the pallet format. A sack of green beans and a case of retail tins occupy very different space and weight, and the quote follows the finished cargo, not the raw ingredient.

Give us the numbers that drive the quote: carton count, carton length, width and height in centimetres, gross weight per carton, and whether the goods palletise or floor-load. LCL billing uses weight or volume, whichever is greater, and a minimum billable volume commonly applies. Precise finished dimensions stop the quote from being revised after booking.

If your range also covers powdered blends, read how we approach supplement powder shipping, and for seasoning or condiment lines see ingredients & seasonings. The full set of product categories is listed on the product hub.

Packaging for moisture, aroma and seal integrity

Tea and coffee are moisture- and aroma-sensitive. The first line of defence is the pack, not the container. Ask your supplier about the barrier film, the seal temperature and whether the inner pack is heat-sealed rather than merely zipped or folded shut.

Retail paper cartons alone usually are not a sufficient moisture barrier for a long ocean voyage. Add a foil or laminated inner bag where the product specification calls for it, and confirm the seal still holds after rough handling at both ends.

Protect the aroma. Roasted coffee and scented teas pick up and release smells quickly. In a shared LCL container they can absorb odours from stronger cargo or lose their own fragrance. Discuss co-loading compatibility at booking, rather than opening a damaged pallet on arrival.

Food-safe desiccant sachets are cheap insurance for hygroscopic lines. Size them to the net weight of the pack, and record the humidity and temperature specification the manufacturer requires so the receiving warehouse knows how to store the stock.

Storage and stowage through the voyage

Standard ocean freight is not temperature-controlled. Plan for the ambient conditions of the sailing and for the humidity swings a container sees as it crosses climate zones. Keep cargo on pallets, off the floor and away from container walls where condensation can form.

Choose stowage that avoids wet and heavy neighbours. Tell the forwarder your stock is sensitive so it is not stacked under cargo that leaks or sweats. FCL gives you a sealed box under your control. LCL moves your cartons through a container stack and a destination deconsolidation warehouse, so the outer cartons must survive extra handling.

At destination, confirm the receiving warehouse storage temperature and humidity before delivery. A product that survived the voyage can still be rejected if it lands in the wrong racking environment.

Watch for container condensation on long humid crossings. Good palletisation, a sealed inner barrier and a small air gap between the cargo and the container walls all reduce the risk. FCL keeps your stock in one sealed box; LCL opens it up to extra handling in the consolidation chain, so the outer cartons need to be that much stronger.

As a planning reference, China to the US West Coast runs roughly 13–21 days port-to-port by FCL, and 25–35 days to the US East Coast. LCL typically adds about 3–7 days for consolidation, and door-to-door commonly runs 30–50 days. Confirm the current schedule with your forwarder for the sailing week you book.

Paperwork and clearance readiness

Keep the commercial invoice and packing list consistent. The product description, net weight, SKU breakdown and carton marks must match across every document. Warehouse receiving moves fastest when the item references line up exactly with the carton marks.

Food lines arrive under FDA import rules. FDA prior notice is due at least 8 hours before ocean arrival, and the Importer Security Filing (ISF) is due 24 hours before the cargo is loaded on board the vessel. These filings sit with the US importer of record; we coordinate the freight-side paperwork around their timing.

Foreign supplier verification (FSVP) is the US importer’s responsibility, not the forwarder’s. Hand your importer the manufacturer and batch details early, so the freight timeline is not held waiting for records.

Ask for surcharges itemised in writing. Fuel, terminal, security and peak-season charges vary by sailing week and carrier, and a rate that hides them can move later. Peak-season windowing tends to be heaviest in the autumn stocking months, so book ahead if your launch depends on it. A formal entry also carries a small merchandise processing fee; broker service fees are quoted per item.

Keep the delivery appointment in mind from day one. Give the destination ZIP code and ask the receiving warehouse about pallet and unloading requirements, because those details shape the truck and the quote far more than the ocean rate alone.

Retail packs versus wholesale bulk

The paperwork, packing and handling priorities change with your order profile. Align the documents to how the goods actually leave origin and are received.

If you are shipping around 15 CBM or less, LCL is usually the practical starting point. Above that, ask for both an LCL and an FCL quote, because destination deconsolidation charges on LCL can add up. Request both for your lane and compare the door-to-door totals.

Before you book, run through a quick origin checklist:

  • Is the invoice description identical to the product name and the carton marks?
  • Have you told the forwarder the goods are food-grade and aroma-sensitive?
  • Is the delivery ZIP code and the warehouse appointment rule confirmed?
  • Do the pallets fit the receiving warehouse racking and unloading rules?
  • Has the US importer set up FDA prior notice and FSVP for the product?

Frequently asked questions

How much tea or coffee do I need to ship to make FCL worthwhile?

Around 15 CBM is a common starting point. Below that, LCL is usually simpler; above it, FCL per CBM often costs less. Ask for both quotes for your lane, because destination LCL charges can run higher than expected.

Does ocean shipping damage tea or coffee aroma?

It can if the packaging or co-loading is wrong. Use a sealed moisture barrier and avoid sharing a container with strong-smelling or wet cargo. Confirm co-loading rules at booking.

Who files the FDA paperwork for my tea or coffee?

The US importer of record files FDA prior notice and handles FSVP. We coordinate the freight documents and timing around those filings; the importer owns the regulatory side.

How long does ocean freight from China to the USA take?

Roughly 13–21 days to the US West Coast and 25–35 days to the US East Coast by FCL port-to-port. LCL adds about 3–7 days and door-to-door commonly runs 30–50 days. Confirm the current schedule for your sailing week.

Can you deliver to an Amazon FBA warehouse?

We coordinate origin-to-warehouse delivery, including FBA appointments. Edible goods need clear expiry dating on the product and master carton; check the current Amazon Seller Central policy for your category.
